What happens when a capitalist doesn’t have any capital and wants to buy a major league sports franchise?
He lies.
A must-see for any Islanders fan, Kevin Connolly’s documentary Big Shot chronicles the story of John Spano, a Texas businessman whose dream of owning a hockey team came true through a little bit of luck and a lot of paper shuffling.  Lying to the NHL, the owners, several banks, the fans, and quite frankly, himself, Spano perpetrated one of the biggest frauds in sports history when he purchased the New York Islanders in the ’90s without spending a dime of his own non-existent fortune.
Connolly’s documentary is engaging and entertaining—even for a non-sports fan who isn’t a local like myself.  If you’re looking for a fun sports doc out of the Tribeca Film Festival, you can catch Big Shot on 4/27.  Click here for more details.
