It’s hard to believe, but there was a time when Laura Linney didn’t just tell us that we were watching Masterpiece Theater. We kid, but have you seen her in her breakout role in Tales of the City? This excellent miniseries followed the lives of a disparate group of people in post-hippie, pre-AIDS San Francisco. Despite being almost two decades old, the series remains a frank, fascinating and warm portrayal of the time with performances by Linney, Olympia Dukakis, Thomas Gibson and Parker Posey.
